Week 20 Results

We’re nearing the end of the season and the playoffs are less than 2 weeks away. If I have my way, in 2 week the Miami Carlins will have a bye week. Week 20 didn’t help any as the Miami Carlins lost the Jimmy Dean Vienna Sausages 355-322.

Player of the Week honors go to Ian Kinsler with 24 points. Enemy of the Week goes to Evan Longoria with 33 points aka the amount I lost by. Disappointment of the Week goes to Wade Miley with 8 points. It was a close battle for this award and I almost gave it to the Starlin Castro/Jose Iglesias combo. Miley wins it because he couldn’t even beat the Phillies and because of his twerking performance at the VMAs.

Now for scores from around the league:

Houston Asterisks fought Team Gold and earned a win, 320-293

Team Boyle snuck their way back into a possible playoff spot with a 309-216 win over Cecil Cantrell

Stone Cold narrowed out Drunkin’ Drafters 274-256

Si Hurricanes got their first win since…I can’t count that high. They beat The Fuzzy Taints, 342-243

Now for Atlanta Slaves news:

The Slaves lost their first place position, but are only 3.5 games out of first. The playoffs are near inevitable, unless there is an epic collapse. The only prize in this league is a ring and I have gross fingers so I’m going more for pride.

This week the Miami Carlins face off against Team Gold. Already the Carlins trail 46-26, but still have all 7 starts while Team Gold has already used one. The way I see it, one more win and the Carlins clinch a playoff bye. Most likely The Fuzzy Taints and Drunkin’ Drafters will not catch-up in points scored, the first tie-breaker used to determine playoff positioning. Here’s hoping the Carlins can close this thing out a week early.

A Brief Team Review – Near September Callups

On Wednesday the fat lady started tuning up her voice. On the final day of this week’s match-up, she’s getting a little anxious to start singing. The Miami Carlins lead Si Hurricanes 223-202, with 3 starts left to Si Hurricanes’ 1 start.

I haven’t been doing much intrepid reporting so I thought I would take some time to do a quick team review. Ever since Nelson Cruz and Jhonny Peralta were suspended there have been more opportunities for other players to step up. Has anyone?

Shortstop:

The weakest position on the Carlins, Starlin Castro started off as the team’s starter and now only because Jose Iglesias struggling nearly as much, the spot is still open. Castro is nearly guaranteed to earn the Disappointment of the Year Award. Somehow he has survived being released, mostly because I keep convincing myself he’s overdue. Shortstop will continue being a revolving door between the two for the rest of the season and into the playoffs. I don’t have much faith in either of these guys as this week they have a combined -4 points. I would be better off not having any shortstop at all. Wow.

Catcher:

Wilson Ramos came in during Carlos Santana’s struggles and has gotten a few spot starts. The position still belongs to Santana, but I feel a lot more comfortable with Ramos as the backup than Salvador Perez who is a singles hitter with a .270 average. Santana started off great and slowly “Starlin Castro’ed” his way to a poor average. And yes, I want to start calling people who disappoint me Starlin Catros.

Pablo Sandoval:

Another player who struggled this year for me and was a high pick as Pablo Sandoval. Sandoval kept landing on the disabled list too, which didn’t help his cause at keeping him in the lineup with the numbers Matt Carpenter has put up. Now with the Utility position open, Sandoval has seen more playing time and has made the best of it. This week Sandoval has already earned 16 points. That’s 1 point for every 3 pounds he needs to lose to be a good player again. Not bad.

Yo-Yo Fantasy Baseball’ing

Up and down, up and down. That’s how some of the scores go on a weekly basis in fantasy baseball. This week I’ve had the lead for the entire time, sometimes very narrowly. After yesterday’s poor performance from Jake Westbrook and Matt Moore combining for 1 point, the Drunkin’ Drafters have something to drink to. They lead the Miami Carlins 213-207.

Look at me, acting as if this is the end of the world. A single home run gives the Miami Carlins the lead. It won’t even take a home run. Jordan Zimmermann and Mike Minor pitch today for the Carlins and they WILL persevere because if they don’t there WILL be trouble.

“Skip isn’t afraid of taking away the things we enjoy when we fail,” said Carlins short stop Starlin Castro. “And believe me, I know something about failing. I’m hitting like .250 and I was a fourth round pick or something like that.”

Drunkin’ Drafters will use his final starts on, who knows? I may get lucky this week again and he may not realize one of his guys is getting a start pushed back. Today it looks like Alex Cobb. I’m hoping he doesn’t realize and even more so, I’m hoping no one else in the league warns him. Since my sworn mortal enemy in this league, Jimmy Dean Vienna Sausages, also happens to be one of only a few from the league who come to this blog for advice (yes, I’m taking credit for their 9-1 record), I have to worry about pointing out such things in public. We’ll see what happens. I got lucky last week against Cecil Cantrell only using 5 starts, not that it would have mattered. This week it matters though and my emotions are yo-yo’ing all over the place.

Week 1 Results

The first week of the season was a tumultuous one. Things between father and son went back and forth. Team Boyle got off to an early lead, Miami Carlins came back only to lose that lead. Going into the final day, Miami Carlins were ahead by 20 points with two starts left.

I am proud to announce that week one was a win for the Miami Carlins! The final score 329-283. Things did not come down to the wire as much as I thought they might. A fantastic offensive showing by catcher Carlos Santana during the day as well as Ian Kinsler adding some during the last game of the week helped secure an easy victory for the Miami Carlins squadron. Cole Hamels had me worried earlier in the day and Yu Darvish got off to a poor start. Stars aligned and what needed to happen happened, Miami Carlins are off to a great start.

Player of the Week goes to Yu Darvish. He was my top scorer with 56 points. Two wins plus his near perfect outing helped earn him this honor.

Enemy of the Week goes to Chris Davis. I didn’t really trash the guy at all, but he put up an astonishing 49 points. He’s leading the league in nearly every offensive category, maybe all of them even. I don’t hate him as much as I do other players on Team Boyle so I let him be.

Disappointment of the Week goes to Starlin Castro. I picked Castro early in the draft so I have high expectations for the man who has played like a boy. He only contributed 6 points to the team. Could back-up Alexei Ramirez see extra playing time?

(Sorry pal. Please don’t make that face.)

Now for scores around the league:

SI Hurricanes brought the storm to Stone Cold 337-231

Drunkin’ Drafter stumbled his way ahead of Houston Asterisks 286-235

Cecil Cantrell shaved off a victory to The Fuzzy Taints 312-272

Jimmy Dean Vienna Sausages cashed in on Team Gold

Did you like those stupid puns? They will be better next week.

As far as the Atlanta Slaves go, the team is currently in second place with a 9-5-2 record. This week they go up against “2012 Fantasy Champion” who currently rest in first place. Don’t get comfortable. Like I said the last time I mentioned you, it’s 2013 now.

Oddly enough, Miami Carlins will go up against the top scoring team in this league as well, but they only scored a little bit more than I did. Week Two will see a match-up between Miami Carlins and SI Hurricanes. There is no blood relation with the two of us. Mercy? I’ve forgotten what that means.
